Fmr. Wilcox Co. H.S. principal loses appeal on sexual misconduct conviction

WILCOX CO., AL (WSFA) -

A former Wilcox County High School principal did not get the answer he was hoping for Monday as his criminal appeals process continues.

Dallas and Perry County District Attorney Michael Jackson said James Thomas' conviction was upheld by the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals.

Thomas was sentenced in December 2012 for having inappropriate contact with a student at Wilcox County High School. He was sentenced to serve one year in jail. The sentence came a month after a jury found the 69-year-old guilty of sexual misconduct against the student.

The student claimed Thomas kissed her and made her touch him inappropriately.

Jackson says Thomas is planning an appeal to the Alabama Supreme Court, but that appeal will likely take months.

Thomas, who once served as a Democrat state representative for Selma, was required to register as a sex offender as part of his conviction.
