CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

A man who ran from police is recovering this morning in the hospital after he was struck by a deputy's cruiser.

A Hamilton County Deputy Sheriff stopped a 2005 Honda driven by 31-year-old Cordell Johnson at Reading Road and Section Road around 8:45 P-M Thursday evening.  During the stop, officers say Johnson drove away and the deputy followed.

Johnson drove southbound on Reading Road for about 3 miles.  Deputies say the chase did not exceed 45 miles per hour.  Near the 1200 block of Roassmore Avenue Johnson suddenly stopped the car and started to run on foot.  When he jumped out of the car, police say Johnson dropped a loaded hand gun which he attempted to retrieve.  At this point the deputy drove into the driver's side of the Honda and hit Johnson.

Johnson is facing a number of charges including Resisting Arrest, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Having Weapons Under Disability and Possession of Marijuana.  He is being treated at University of Cincinnati Medical Center for a leg injury.

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Department has not released the name of the deputy involved.  The incident remains under investigation by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office Traffic Safety Unit.
