Birmingham Police cruiser catches fire during apprehension

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Police say that a cruiser caught fire Wednesday when it rolled backwards and collided with a pole.

Sgt. Johnny Williams says that around 4:30 p.m. police were in the 1600 block of 19th Place Southwest in Powderly, trying to apprehend a subject. They were outside of the cruiser when the it rolled backwards, colliding with a pole. The cruiser, one of the newer models according to Williams, caught on fire.

An officer sustained minor injuries during a scuffle with the subject and both are being evaluated by medical personnel.
