Music City Center construction workers' data could be released

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

We may finally learn how many of the workers who participated in the construction of the massive new convention center actually lived here.

The Tennessee Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal of a lower court ruling that ordered the Music City Center to disclose the addresses of the men and women who helped build the multi-million dollar structure.

"We employed 7,300 people over the life of this project," said Mayor Karl Dean at the Music City Center dedication earlier this year. "That's 2 1/2 times more than what was predicted."

The Channel 4 I-Team was first to investigate the issue of local jobs when we heard from qualified construction workers who couldn't seem to land a spot on one of the many building crews.

Later, the crane operators' union sued for the release of workers' names and addresses.

The Music City Center eventually made some information public but redacted much of the identifying data about the workforce, even their zip codes, saying the workers' privacy was at risk.

In the next couple of weeks, we may know what percentage of the jobs were truly local.

Everything but the workers' Social Security numbers will become public record.
