BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - One year ago, Hurricane Isaac made its second landfall along the Louisiana coast, slowly creeping over the state and leaving small communities like Braithwaite in ruins.
As you prepare your family this hurricane season, keep in mind there is a new item the East Baton Rouge Mayor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (MOHSEP) is asking you to add to emergency kits.
"In most instances, FEMA can get us tarps here, but that's 72 hours," said Tuesday Mills with MOHSEP. "Tarps cost less than $10. If you're in a local hardware store, you see a tarp, it's not a bad idea to keep it in your garage, somewhere in your kit. Then, if you have that damage, wait 'til the storm is over, make sure there are no live wires anywhere, then you can tarp your own home."
She also reminds everyone even though it's calm in the Gulf of Mexico now, it only takes one storm so be prepared for the worst and hope for the best.
