Former MTSU players in court Thursday

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

Three former Middle Tennessee State University football players appeared in court Thursday for their roles in an alleged assault.

General Sessions Judge Ben McFarlin set the next court appearance for them for Sept. 23.

James Jones is accused of choking his girlfriend and hitting her in the head with a football.

Rodney O'Neal and Marcus Robinson are in trouble because police said they were present at the time of the assault but did not report it.

The university dismissed all three players from the football team after their arrests.
