MORGAN CITY, LA (WAFB) -

Investigators said a man and woman face charges after leaving their young son at a park while they stole a bicycle on August 18.

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office reported Michael Thompson Jr., 28, and Amanda Parker, 23, both of Morgan City, were arrested Wednesday.

Deputies said they drove into a parking lot at The Swamp Skate Park with a boy and after sitting under a pavilion for about 20 minutes, Thompson took a bike, rode out of the park and met Parker, leaving the child at the park. The boy is between four and six years old.

According to authorities, Thompson and Parker loaded the bike into their vehicle, then returned to the park and picked up the boy.

SMPSO said it received multiple tips on the identity and whereabouts of the couple after pictures and a description of the crime were posted on Facebook. Deputies found them at their home and arrested them.

Thompson and Parker are both charged with child desertion and theft. They were booked into the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center. Bond had still not been set as of Thursday morning.

Their son was placed in the care of a guardian. The stolen bicycle has been recovered.
