CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A Charlotte man was arrested Tuesday after police say he tried to kill a pregnant woman after he learned that he was not the father of her unborn child.

Maurice Dermont Hunter, 20, of Charlotte, is charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, discharging a weapon in an occupied property and communicating threats, according to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.

Officers with the Cornelius Police Department were called to an apartment on Meridian Street early Tuesday morning in reference to a shooting, according to the warrant.

A woman told police that Hunter came to her apartment after finding out that he was not the father of her baby.

A heated conversation followed and Hunter told the woman he was going to kill her, according to the warrant.

He fired two shots at her, missing both times, and fled the scene.

Detectives recovered two shell casing from .45 caliber handgun and a fired projectile outside the apartment.

Investigators traced cell phones calls from Hunter's phone back to his residence on Bearwood Avenue in Charlotte.

Hunter was taken into custody without incident.
