MILLBROOK, AL (WSFA) -

Millbrook authorities are releasing the name of a motorcyclist who was killed Tuesday afternoon after colliding with an SUV on Alabama Highway 14.

Austin Owens, 22, of Deatsville was killed with the 2008 Yamaha motorcycle he was riding collided with an SUV in the 3700 block of Highway 14. The collision happened in front of the McDonalds at 5:04 p.m.

Investigators say witnesses on the scene saw Owens' motorcycle traveling west when it hit a 2008 Ford Explore that was turning out of the McDonalds, east onto Hwy. 14.

Authorities say Owens struck the SUV on the front driver side door. He was pronounced dead on the scene a short time later.

One person in the SUV was transported to an area hospital. Chief P.K. Johnson said that person was evaluated not because of injuries from the wreck but because they are a recent heart patient and complained of chest pains.

"Because a death occurred as a result of this collision, we are conducting a traffic homicide investigation," Chief Johnson said. "This case is being investigated by our Traffic Homicide Investigative Unit. Our investigator will turn all facts and evidence collected during this investigation to the Elmore County Grand Jury for its consideration, which is standard in any traffic collision resulting in a fatality."

The police chief said even though the investigation is in its preliminary stages, he does not believe any criminal charges will be filed. Chief Johnson said based on witness interviews, it appears, "that speed was a major contributing factor in the cause of this collision."

"It's a sad occasion anytime that you have a loss of life, especially one so young. Hopefully people will realize that we as a society get in too much of a hurry sometimes," Chief Johnson said. "We think about law enforcement and the possibility of getting a traffic ticket. In this case the consequences were much more severe. The cost is far too great. Our heartfelt prayers and thoughts go out to the victim's family."
