ZWOLLE, LA (KSLA) -

A Zwolle police officer has been arrested by Sabine Parish deputies, charged with doctor shopping and obtaining controlled dangerous substances by fraud.

Warden Joe Dewil says Tanya N. James, 37, was arrested on warrants out of Natchitoches Parish on Monday afternoon and booked into the Sabine Parish Detention Center on the charge.

Doctor shopping refers to the practice of a patient requesting care from multiple physicians, often simultaneously, without making efforts to coordinate care or informing the physicians of the multiple caregivers.

This usually stems from a patient's addiction to, or reliance on, certain prescription drugs or other medical treatment.

Dewil had no further details on the arrest.

The Zwolle Police Department has confirmed that James is a patrol officer, and confirmed that she was at the department and on the clock when she was taken into custody.

The chief deputy of the Zwolle PD was unable to comment on her current status with the department, or how long she had worked there.
