Police bust cocaine operation as suspect crashes into MTA bus

Seven people were hurt as a man suspected in a cocaine operation that reaches from Mexico to Nashville tried to flee from officers Thursday and crashed into an MTA bus on Brick Church Pike.

Metro police and DEA Task Force agents seized 20 kilograms of cocaine valued at $700,000 that was concealed in a U-Haul trailer being pulled to a storage facility in north Nashville.

As detectives and task force agents moved in on the cocaine shipment at the storage facility, officers on Brick Church Pike attempted to stop a man who was allegedly conducting counter-surveillance of the cocaine shipment's arrival into Nashville.

That's when, police said, 31-year-old Ivan Crump attempted to speed away in a rented Hyundai sedan. But as Crump rounded a turn at Brick Church Pike and Ewing Drive, his vehicle collided into an MTA special needs bus at the intersection. The bus then struck a passenger car.

Crump allegedly tried to run from the scene on foot, but officers arrested him a short distance away, police said.

Four people on the bus, including the driver, and three people in the passenger car, including an adult and two children, were transported to area hospitals for treatment of non-critical injuries. Each was later released from the hospital.

A police officer at the storage facility - in the 2400 block of Brick Church Pike - reported feeling dizzy after a fender bender between a Metro police vehicle and a vehicle from another law enforcement agency. That officer was transported to a hospital to get checked out and was later released.

Five people, including Crump, are in custody on various charges related to the drug investigation, which Metro police said is still active. The identities of the other four suspects have not been released.

The DEA Task Force includes members of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
