GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - The suspect in an armed robbery and carjacking of a pizza delivery man is out of the hospital and in police custody after a high speed chase with Gonzales Police Sunday night.
Daniel West has been charged with one count of armed robbery, theft of motor vehicle, and aggravated flight from an officer.
Gonzales police said they received a call around 8:30 p.m. Sunday about an armed robbery in progress at Domino's Pizza on Airline Highway. Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley says West carjacked a pizza delivery driver at gunpoint, stealing his vehicle.
Police were able to find the vehicle, but the discovery turned into a high speed chase. Officers used spike strips to stop the vehicle, but West got out of the car and ran. Officials say he ran through an apartment complex where another officer in a patrol car caught up to him.
Police say West turned and pointed a gun at the officers and that is when the officers opened fire on him.
West was shot one time and was taken to the hospital where he was in critical but stable condition. He was released Wednesday afternoon. Police said none of the officers suffered any major injuries.
West has a lengthy criminal history including felony theft and burglary charges in Jefferson, Lafayette, Terrebonne and LaFourche Parishes.
The investigation is ongoing and more charges could be filed.
