NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) -

Newport Police are investigating an apparent drowning of a baby in a bath tub.

Authorities say the incident happened Wednesday morning in an apartment near the intersection of 10th and Patterson Street in Newport.

Liam James McKenzie was pronounced dead at Cincinnati Children's Hospital on Wednesday, just one day after he turned 5-months-old.

The baby's mother, 29-year-old Amanda McKenzie, told police she fell asleep in the bathtub with her infant son in her arms.

Liam's babysitter Jamie Griffin heard the same story.

"She's telling me that she had him in her arms like this in the bathtub, and then she let go and nodded out. Who knows how long she nodded out, was out. Who knows how long she was in the water," Griffin explained.

Griffin says she was watching Liam Tuesday night as McKenzie and her friends had a party at the house. Griffin tells FOX19 she left the house at 6:30 a.m.

"A couple hours later the ambulance was outside, and I went to her and she had a towel around her, and she was sitting on the steps saying 'Liam Liam Liam', and I was like where's he at? Where's the baby at? He was in the squad, life squad, already dead," said Griffin.

Newport Police Chief Tom Collins said his department hasn't filed any criminal charges in this case because they are still waiting on autopsy results and toxicology reports.
