This Saturday, the Louisiana Men's Health Organization will take over Pennington Biomedical Research Center, celebrating 12 years of helping men take charge of their well being with the 2013 Men's Health Conference.
The 2013 conference will offer health screenings that will evaluate blood pressure, cholesterol, body fat, skin, vision and more. Along with the free screenings, the conference will bring together some of the area's top experts to talk about the health issues plaguing men today.
Among those talks will be Dr. Nikhil Dhurandhar, a Pennington researcher and an obesity specialist.
"I would like to show in the conference that it is not enough to know how much body fat you have. It also matters where that body fat is located," said Dhurandhar.
The health concerns of obesity and the diseases that go along with it have risen as quickly as the case rates. In his session called "Belly size is important to your health," Dr. Duran hopes to show that the size of your obesity risk lies quite simply in the size of your waist.
Men with a waist line of more than 40 inches are at more risk; for women the key number is34 inches. However, size isn't all. Where the fat lies can also increase health risks.
"Those people who have the body fat distributed in their abdomen, abdominal fat as it is called, they have great risk due to that fat, compared to someone who has the identical amount of fat that's stored in different place."
Dhurandhar explains that's because belly fat interferes with organs that help control the body's metabolism. The researcher also points out, that small steps towards a healthier life can make a big difference.
