GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - The suspect in an armed robbery and carjacking of a pizza delivery man is in critical but stable condition after a high speed chase with Gonzales Police Sunday night.
The Gonzales Police Department identified the suspect as Daniel West. He has been charged with armed robbery, vehicle theft and aggravated flight from an officer. Detectives said the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office will file additional charges.
Gonzales police said they received a call around 8:30 p.m. about an armed robbery in progress at Domino's Pizza on Airline Highway. Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley says West carjacked a pizza delivery driver at gunpoint, stealing his vehicle.
Police were able to find the vehicle, but the discovery turned into a high speed chase.
"They tried several times to spike the vehicle," said Det. Steven Nethkin. "Ultimately, they were successful in their last attempt. Another officer was able to effectively stop the suspect at the corner of Roddy (Road) and Churchpoint (Road)."
Officials said a foot chase then ensued. The suspect ran through an apartment complex where another police officer in a patrol car caught up to him. They added West, who was armed with a gun, turned on officers and they "neutralized" him.
In a news release issued Monday afternoon, Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley cleared up the "neutralized" comment and said the officer fired multiple shots when the suspect pointed a gun at the officers, but the suspect was shot one time.
Investigators said West is listed in critical but stable condition. Police said none of the officers suffered any major injuries.
According to Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley, "all evidence, including independent eye witnesses, indicates that the officer involved and the Gonzales Police Department acted in full accordance with policies, procedures, and State law."
West has a lengthy criminal history including felony theft and burglary charges in Jefferson, Lafayette, Terrebonne and LaFourche Parishes.
The investigation is ongoing.
