Erin weakens to tropical depression

MIAMI, FL (WAFB) - What was Tropical Storm Erin has weakened to a tropical depression over the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

The National Hurricane Center said it was located at 16.9 North and 32.1 West or about 540 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands.

Maximum sustained winds were down to 35 mph and it was moving west-northwest at 17 mph.

Forecasters said the storm is expected to continue on its current heading, with a gradual decrease in forward speed, over the next couple of days.
