BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - There has been little movement in the lawsuit, but Secretary of State Tom Schedler finds a request he received quite disturbing.
The suit claims Louisiana agencies violated the National Voting Rights Act said officials didn't do enough to make sure people with disabilities were not routinely aided in the voter registration process. The complaint says officials failed to offer voter registration forms or services to people who apply for disability benefits.
Schedler said the U.S. Department of Justice asked him to hand over information on nearly 3 million registered voters in Louisiana personal identifying information, like social security numbers and their mother's maiden names.
Schedler says the lawsuit is still in the discovery phase. It was filed two years ago in district court in Baton Rouge.
A similar suit filed against the state on behalf of an individual voter is now awaiting a judge's decision in the court of appeals in New Orleans.
