DENHAM SPRINGS, LA (WAFB) -

Friends and family are holding a fundraiser for a mother who drowned while saving her child last week.

All three of Martha Dartt's young children went or still go to Eastside Elementary on Lockhart Road in Denham Springs. Those wanting to help the family can drop off donations at the front desk.

The East Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office said Dartt, 38, of Denham Springs, and her three kids were swimming on the Amite River off Burns Lane near Clinton on August 6.

Deputies reported Dartt's son got into deep water and she went to help him. She was able to push him to shore, but could not get herself to safety.

Sheriff Talmadge Bunch said Dartt was not a strong swimmer, but still went to her son's rescue when he got too far out in the river. Tragically, the children were nearby as their mother drowned.
