Narcotics detectives said they started their investigation on July 25 and five days into it saw Coupel involved in what they believed was a drug deal in her car in the parking lot of a business. They later pulled her over and reported seizing heroin, hypodermic needles and other drug paraphernalia.

They said their investigation later led to an arrest warrant for Ealem and he was picked up on August 10.

APSO reported undercover narcotics agents made several drug buys on July 31 and August 1. Officials said the undercovers purchased heroin, cocaine, morphine, hydrocodone and synthetic marijuana. They said detectives were then able to get arrest warrants on the other five suspects and take four of them into custody.
