NEW ROADS, LA (WAFB) - Pointe Coupee Parish Tourism Director Jeannie Andre loves to work and watch her parish grow. But, what she doesn't love is the amount of space she has to work with.
The Pointe Coupee Tourist Commission office is located in a small building off hospital road in New Roads.
"If we're growing in numbers, we need to have a facility to bring in a larger number of people that want to come see something here in Pointe Coupee. To find us on the map," said Andre.
The tourism center is funded by the parish's motel/hotel tax, and by the police jury. But, Andre says that's not enough for what she envisions a newer, bigger place for visitors to stop, rest and get information.
Andre says a better facility will bring more attention to places like the Pointe Coupee Parish Museum.
"They love to go there and a little lady would give a little tour and she would speak in French it was a parish jail way back when," said Andre.
Wiona Sicard has a passion for the museum. The retired librarian has been working there for 10 years. She says it's the parish's history that has people come from all over.
"We tell them about the parish, about false river and we give them a tour. Some visitors come from out of state and some are French. If they speak French I give the tour in French," said Sicard.
Tourism officials are in the very early stages of planning for a new visitor center they don't have land picked out yet, and the fundraising is just getting started.
