Woman drowns in Amite River while saving son

CLINTON, LA (WAFB) -

Authorities said a woman drowned in the Amite River while trying to save her son Tuesday.

The East Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office said Martha Dartt, 38, of Denham Springs, and her three kids were swimming when the incident happened on the Amite River off Burns Lane near Clinton around 3 p.m.

Deputies reported Dartt's son got into deep water and she went to help him. She was able to push him to shore, but could not get herself to safety.

Sheriff Talmadge Bunch said Dartt was not a strong swimmer, but still went to her son's rescue when he got too far out in the river. Tragically, the children were nearby as their mother drowned.

Bunch added Dartt was likely underwater for about 30 minutes before he and other emergency workers were able to pull her from the 13 feet deep water.
