BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A judge ruled suspended LSU running back Jeremy Hill will continue to be on probation, instead of going to jail, but added 40 hours of community service, during a hearing Monday.

The ruling means Hill is now free to play football, but the decision rests in the hands of LSU head coach Les Miles.

Hill was possibly facing jail time after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor battery charge, a violation of his probation from an earlier misdemeanor plea.

Judge Bonnie Jackson ordered Hill to perform the community service at Bishop Ott Service. He will also remain under the curfew imposed by a previous judge.

The case is scheduled for review on Jan. 10, 2014.

Hill, the leading rusher last season, was caught on video punching a man outside a bar last spring.
