NEW YORK (WABC/CNN) - A tragic accident in New York sent a woman plummeting to her death from her high-rise apartment after her balcony gave way.

The shocking fall has left the victim's family and neighbors shaken up.

"I was in bed when I heard the thud," a neighbor said. "I didn't know, I couldn't imagine it was what it was."

New York City advertising executive, 35-year-old Jennifer Rosoff, plummeted to her death, falling from the 17th floor balcony of her midtown-Manhattan apartment early Thursday morning.

She was on a first date, according to police.

She had gone out to the balcony at about 1 a.m. to talk and share a cigarette with her date.

Rosoff's date said he heard popping sounds, according to reports, and that's when the railing snapped from under her.

"It shakes you up," the neighbor said. "It's a shame."

According to local reports, witnesses say Rosoff's date was hysterical, running frantically from the building elevators, crying and screaming, "My friend fell! She fell off of the building."

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rosoff worked at Triplelift, an advertising startup.

Before that, she held jobs at the New Yorker and Cosmopolitan magazine.

Rosoff's sister says the family is in shock.

"Everybody loved her," Alex Treeby said. "My children loved her. My children thought she was the sun and the moon. She did charity work. I just talked to her yesterday. We're just in shock."

City officials say no one else was injured, but a vacate order for all balconies in the building has been issued as a precaution.

Stonehenge Management, the company that manages the building, said it's "cooperating fully with the investigation into the cause of this terrible accident"
