Fearing for his life, child calls 911 on father for driving drunk

STONINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

A 10-year-old boy said he was fearing for his life when he called 911 on his father for driving drunk.

Connecticut State Police said troopers from Troop E in Montville responded to a motor vehicle crash on Interstate 95 south near exit 91 in the town of Stonington Wednesday night, but just prior to this Rhode Island State Police told Troop E that they had just received a 911 call from a 10-year-old boy reporting that he and his 12-year-old sister were passengers in a vehicle being driven by their father, Owen Gilman.

The boy told police that he was in fear for his life because his father was drunk and was traveling at a high rate of speed.

The child also told them that he was so scared that he was considering jumping from the moving vehicle because it was a better option than crashing at the speeds that they were traveling.

Moments later the call was lost as it was being transferred to Connecticut State Police.

Just after the call was lost, troopers were called to the scene of a serious two-vehicle crash in which the vehicle driven by Gilman, a 2007 Mercedes Benz C230 rear ended a Jeep Grand Cherokee at a high rate of speed.

The collision sent the Jeep and its occupant 50 feet off the shoulder of the interstate and down an embankment where the vehicle overturned.

The driver was brought to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was treated for blunt force trauma and treatment for lacerations.

The 10-year-old boy and his sister were also brought to a local hospital to be treated for lacerations suffered in the crash.

Gilman was uninjured and was immediately arrested after failing a field sobriety test.

State police said there was a large amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle as well.

Gilman, of Warwick, RI, was brought to Troop E for processing and was held on $35,000 bond.

He was charged with reckless driving, operating under the influence, failure to drive at a reasonable distance, possession of drug paraphernalia, illegal sale of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, risk of injury to a minor and assault with a motor vehicle.

Gilman appeared in New London Superior Court on Thursday.

The judge sternly told Gilman that if these accusations are true, the father of two "behaved horribly and should feel blessed his children are safe."

The only people there to see Gilman were his parents and they posted the $250,000 bond. Gilman's parents had no comment for Eyewitness News.
