DENHAM SPRINGS, LA (WAFB) - Authorities said a standoff after a shooting at an apartment complex ended with the suspect being taken to the hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office reported it was notified around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday that shots had been fired at the Live Oak Trace Apartments in Denham Springs.
"I'm in the building, my balcony is looking into his window and I could see where he was shooting out and everything before they evacuated me," said Jonathan Nicosia.
Sheriff's deputies said they arrived on the scene minutes after receiving the call about the shooting. However, investigators said the man barricaded himself inside the apartment and refused to surrender.
The standoff continued for a few hours with no progress from the negotiations and witnesses said additional shots were fired from inside the unit. A SWAT team fired tear gas into the apartment around 9:15 p.m. and the suspect was taken into custody.
According to LPSO, the suspect apparently shot himself in the face and was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge by ambulance. Investigators said he is listed in stable condition. His name has not been released.
Neighbors said the commotion caused by the standoff is very different from the usual quiet and safety of the area.
"I thought this was a safe neighborhood. It's usually calm around here and everything, but not tonight. Tonight is a little different," Nicosia added.
