BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Baton Rouge Police Department has released the names of the two officers involved in a shooting that left a man dead early Sunday morning.
The officers were identified as Joshua Gillich, 28, and Michael Davila, 43. BRPD reported Gillich has been with the department for four years, while Davila just joined in February. Both officers are on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure as officer-involved shootings remain under investigation..
Investigators said Tyris Wilkerson, 32, of Baton Rouge, was shot and killed on South Eugene Street at Louisiana Avenue around 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Officials said the officers were trying to pull over a car, but the driver refused to stop and sped through several neighborhoods.
According to reports, once at the intersection of South Eugene and Louisiana officers tried to stop the car, but Wilkerson allegedly instead drove straight at them. Police said one of the officers fired several gunshots into the front windshield of the car. Wilkerson was hit in the head and pronounced dead at the scene.
Wilkerson was convicted in 1996 of second-degree murder after shooting Frederick Young, 40, in September of 1994. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
The case was unique because it was the first time local authorities had used a new law that allowed prosecutors to try 14-year-olds as adults. Wilkerson was 14 at the time of the murder, and he was 15 when he was convicted by a jury.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
