BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Police are investigating a single-vehicle crash that left an elderly man dead Thursday morning.

The Baton Rouge Police Department identified the victim as Walter Georgetown Sr., 83, of Baton Rouge. He was alone in the SUV.

The wreck happened on Florida Boulevard and North 9th Street in downtown Baton Rouge just after 9:45 a.m.

Investigators believe Georgetown was exiting I-110 North onto Florida when he apparently lost control of his Chevy Blazer, causing him to strike a concrete support pillar.

He was taken to an area hospital, where he later died.

The accident was right under the I-110 overpass and caused the Florida exit ramp to be shut down for a while.
