Iberville deputies participate in "active shooter" training

PLAQUEMINE, LA (WAFB) - Nearly 60 law enforcement agents participated in "active shooter" training at Plaquemine High School this week.

Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi said he is grateful that his deputies are able to receive this valuable training.

"Training is everything," said Stassi. "If we can get some people on site with a team we can go into the school and close the distance. Close the time our young children are vulnerable."

He says he hopes that nothing like the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary school happens in his parish. 20 Children were shot to death along with 6 adults at Sandy Hook.

Sgt. Dusty Herring of the Desoto Parish Sheriff's Office is leading the week long training session.

"What I can give them is tactics and techniques different things that are modified from SWAT," said Herring. "They can put the two together that will give them a better chance to survive something like that."

Desoto Parish is providing the training at no charge.

Stassi says the training will wrap up on Thursday.
