Golden Rams bring back Smith as OC

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Steve Smith is returning to Albany for his second stint as the Albany State offensive coordinator.

Golden Rams head coach Mike White confirms to WALB ASU has hired Smith to the vacant position.

"It's one of the top D-II schools in the country," Smith says. "I think it's a great opportunity to come back and have the opportunity to be a part of something special."

In his first stint as offensive coordinator, Smith led his "Gold Rush" offense to a 19-4 record between 2009-2010.

Smith says he believes the Rams can get back to that level of success.

"It's very possible. We want to get it done," Smith says. "We just have to do the kind of things that we need to do as far as getting our players set off the field and then do the things on the field so we can be successful and get back to where we were."

White says many of the things Smith instilled offensively in 2009, including terminology, are still in place.

He believes that will help ease the transition back to Smith, something that will be done on limited time with fall camp coming up in just a few weeks.

"That'll help a great deal," Smith says. "Now there's a couple of shortcuts you can take in there. But you can't take anything for granted. You still have to go over everything and make sure we understand everything that's going on."

Smith says the "Gold Rush" isn't back. He admits it never really left in the first place.

His focus now is getting his players up to speed with everything they need before fall camp.

"It's just getting everything in, as far as meeting players, getting the defensive terminology together, make sure we understand what we're looking for," Smith says. "Because those are the couple things that really stood out for us in 2009 and 2010 to make us a successful offense."

In 2012, Smith served as an assistant offensive line coach with the Kansas City Chiefs.

In addition to his coordinator duties, Smith will be the Golden Rams's offensive line coach.

Smith will replace former coordinator Uyl Joyner, who resigned in May to take the same position at Dougherty High.
