HARVEY, LA (WAFB) - Investigators have a suspect in custody in connection with the brutal killing of a 6-year-old girl.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office arrested Matthew Flugence, 20, of Harvey, around 11 p.m. He faces a charge of first-degree murder in the killing of Ahlittia North.
He was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center Wednesday morning after being questioned throughout the night. Sheriff Newell Normand said Flugence admitted to the murder during that questioning. He is being held without bond.
Her body was found late Monday night in the apartment complex where her family lives. Flugence is the nephew of her stepfather.
"Well, everything's pointing to him, so you can't have no choice but to believe it's him," said Albert Hill, victim's stepfather.
Deputies said Flugence is also a suspect in the sexual battery of an 11-year-old earlier this year.
A makeshift memorial has formed where the little girl's body was found. Dozens of people have dropped off flowers and teddy bears in her memory.
WWL-TV reports Flugence's older brother, Russell Flugence, was arrested and booked with obstruction of justice on Tuesday. Russell Flugence allegedly withheld information that implicated Matthew Flugence in the murder.
