Benefits differ for families of fallen Prescott firefighters

Questions are popping up about the benefits family members of the 19 firefighters who died battling the Yarnell Hill wildfire will receive.

Turns out all of the Hotshots' families aren't eligible for the same benefits. That's because only six of the 19 firefighters were full-time employees with the city of Prescott. The other 13 men were seasonal workers.

CBS 5 confirmed the six full-time firefighters are eligible to receive state benefits from the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System. According to officials, the other 13 families will not be covered.

The families of the full-time employees will also receive money from a life insurance policy taken out on the men by the city of Prescott.

There is some good news for the families of those part-time firefighters. A congressional official said each of the 19 families will receive a federally funded death benefit worth $328,000.

All of the families are also entitled to Arizona state retirement benefits, workers compensation, heath insurance and a tuition waiver.

Fundraising started the moment these men died. The organization Professional Firefighters of Arizona has raised nearly $2 million. Every penny goes directly to the families of the fallen firefighters.
