Baker receives grant to improve gas lines

BAKER, LA (WAFB) - Baker has received a $600,000 grant to improve gas lines in the city.

The grant will be used to replace old gas mains, service lines, meters and other equipment in the Baker Heights, Morvant Place and Leland College neighborhoods.

22 gas mains were broken by downed trees during Hurricanes Gustav and Ike.  The lines were temporarily repaired after Gustav and have been monitored for leaks.

The current steel gas mains will be replaced with polyethylene gas mains, which do not corrode.

The total expected cost of the project is $1,027,948.
