Three Tigers named to Award Watch Lists

BATON ROUGE – LSU senior linebacker Lamin Barrow is a candidate for the Butkus Award, while junior defensive tackle Anthony Johnson and junior offensive tackle La'el Collins are up for the Lombardi Award as two more college football preseason individual award watch lists were unveiled on Monday.

The 29th annual Butkus Award is presented to college football's best linebacker. Barrow is one of 51 players across the nation up for the honor. Johnson and Collins are two of 70 players on the watch list for the Lombardi Award, which is limited to down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense or defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, or linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage.

Barrow is LSU's leading returning tackler after recording 104 total tackles last season, which ranked second to only Kevin Minter. For his career, the Marrero, La., native has racked up 139 tackles and nine tackles for loss. He is also a candidate for the Bednarik Award, which is presented annually to the National Defensive Player of the Year.

Johnson is on his fourth preseason watch list, which includes the Bednarik Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Outland Trophy. The New Orleans native is one of the top returning defensive linemen in the nation after he recorded 10 tackles for loss a season ago.

Collins, a powerful run blocker, led the Tigers with 836 total snaps and 64.5 knockdowns in 2012. After starting all 13 games at guard, he made the comfortable move to tackle in the spring.

Semi-finalists for the Butkus Award will be named Oct. 28, finalists Nov. 26, and winners will be notified on or before Dec. 10. The 44th Rotary Lombardi Award will be held on Dec. 11 at the Wortham Center in Houston, Texas.
