5-year-old girl drowns at Grand Bayou Reservoir Resort

RED RIVER PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

Red River Parish Sheriff's deputies have recovered the body of a 5-year-old Natchitoches girl at Grand Bayou Resort in Coushatta.

Deputies say they were called about 6:30 p.m. to respond to a report of a missing child or possible drowning at Grand Bayou Resort. Family members were unable to locate the child and were concerned that she had wandered off or was possibly in the water.

Deputies and Red River emergency personnel arrived on the scene within 7 minutes and began a search in the swimming area and surrounding areas on land.

Shortly before 7, an unresponsive child was located in 4 to 5 feet of water in the designated swimming area.

After unsuccessful attempts by medics to revive the child, she was transported to the Christus Coushatta Health Care Center emergency room. After continued attempts to revive the child, she was pronounced dead at 7:20 p.m.

Red River Parish Deputy Coroner Janell Thomley confirms that the drowning occurred about 6:30 p.m. Thomley says she was called to the lake's swimming area about 7 p.m. but then was rerouted to the Coushatta Health Care Center, where the girl had been taken for treatment.
