Seneca County is seeing significant storm damage after a tornado ripped through a small community Monday night.
The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado touched down just east of the intersection of state Route 635 and Township Road 36, about a mile from Kansas, OH.
The weather service says the tornado touched down at 9:02 p.m. and stayed on the ground for about 100 yards. It was 15 yards wide at its widest point. The tornado was rated as an EF0, and is estimated to have had winds of around 75 mph.
Denny Shane said when he hopped in the shower Monday night the weather was calm. Within minutes, he says he heard thunder and winds.
"Maybe five, 10 minutes it went from being really good to not being good at all," said Shane.
The Liberty Township resident was able to head downstairs and gather his wife and kids just in time to see the tornado strike a mobile home and barn nearby on TR 36. Both structures sustained roof damage.
"You could see the metal from the roof go flying, and then once it pulled the metal off, it got ahold of the old shake shingles. And then you could see the tornado then because of the debris field, and it started spinning and coming across back toward the field, towards us," explained Shane.
Shane says this is the second tornado he and his family have experienced, and he hopes to never see a third.
