BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - As the first half of 2013 draws to a close, there's some encouraging news regarding crime in our area. East Baton Rouge Parish saw 31 homicides for the first six months of the year, a large drop compared to 50 homicides during the same period last year.
Much of the credit for this drop in crime can be given to the Baton Rouge Area Violence Elimination Project (BRAVE), which recently finished a major crackdown on gangs, arresting nine suspected members of a local gang.
By targeting gang-related violence and instituting targeted community policing, BRAVE has made a difference. But, while BRAVE has had success, we must remember the battle is hardly over. It's our hope these positive, but short-term crime statistics encourage people to continue to act bravely by speaking up and helping fight the war on crime.
