CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

19 Action News has found fewer Cleveland police officers have been assigned to a new gang impact squad than predicted.

City Hall had said 20 officers would go to the unit targeting guns and violence or to task forces with federal agencies.

But we've learned 12 officers have been assigned to the new unit while six other officers have been scattered among different departments.

One officer has gone to an FBI task force, the second joined the homicide unit, the third went to the sex crimes unit, the fourth officer works for the domestic violence unit, the fifth has gone to the vehicle impound lot and the sixth works in the logistics unit (a unit overseeing police vehicles).

The chief's office says the assignments were based on the department's "needs" and designed to increase its "effectiveness".
