Rover, still behind bars after July 4th arrest

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

He's known for his crazy stunts but "Shane French" a.k.a Rover of "Rover's Morning Glory" latest stunt landed the popular WMMS radio host in hot water.

Police were called to Whiskey Island just after 3 a.m. Friday, July 5.

An off-duty cop says he was on his boat when he heard fireworks. He walked over to Rover and one of his sidekicks, Michael Toomey, "Chocolate Charlie" on Rover's show.

That's when things got ugly.

Police say Rover and Toomey were quote "highly intoxicated and refused to stop."

At that time the men started shooting fireworks at the officer, "nearly hitting him."

The report goes on to say that Rover got rowdy, grabbing the officer's shirt, even pushed him with both hands in his back -- saying, " I don't believe you're a police officer," even after the officer flashed his badge.

Rover was then told he was under arrest but ran away with his partner in crime.

"The fireworks weren't going all the way up and they were exploding at low altitudes, covering the boats here.  It was totally out of hand and it was actually downright dangerous," says Mark Vadaj.

Fireworks casings, gun powder on picnic tables along with charred casings on expensive boats and cars spotted nearby.

On Rover's nearly $1 million dollar boat were piled up beer cans.

Rover fans had plenty to say about the incident.

"You can't sympathize with stupidity," says Ellery Smith.

"I wouldn't hold it against him. It could happen to anyone," says fan Diana Davis.

Rover was arrested for fireworks charges, assault, aggravated drunken disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

According to Lt. Alicea, Rover, on Friday night, is still behind bars.

19 Action News' calls to WMMS for a comment were not returned.
