GONZALES, LA (WAFB) -
It looks as though a suspected car thief could be spending his 21st birthday behind bars.
Police said John Wallace Aguillard Jr., 20, of Gonzales, turned himself in to them Thursday night. He is suspected of taking an SUV with two small children inside from a Baton Rouge gas station early Thursday morning.
The Gonzales Police Department reported Aguillard was arrested on bench warrants when he surrendered. The warrants were for failure to appear in court on July 2012 on charges of illegal carrying of a firearm and narcotics.
Detectives added Aguillard will later be moved to the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office to face charges. Authorities noted Aguillard's birthday is Saturday.
The Baton Rouge Police Department said a man jumped into a running vehicle in the parking lot of a Circle K on Highland Road around 3:30 a.m. Thursday.
The driver was inside the store and her two young children were in the backseat.
Investigators said the suspect made it a few miles before noticing his passengers and dumped them out of the car at the Quick Mart on Old Perkins Road.
Police reported the children were returned unharmed.
