HAMMOND – The Louisiana Small Business Development Center (LSBDC) at Southeastern Louisiana University and the Livingston Economic Development Council will host an event designed to help local businesses prepare for emergency events that may interrupt business.

The free seminar, "When Disastern Strikes: Emergency Preparedness for Businesses," will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday, July 11, at the Livingston Literacy and Technology Center located at 9261 Florida Blvd. in Walker.

Sandy Summers, assistant director of the Southeastern SBDC, said the survival of a small business can mean more than weathering the economy's ups and downs or attracting consumer interest.

"Sometimes it means recovering from disaster. That disaster can come in the form of a fire that rips through the office or the building, a flood that soaks the business district where your company is located, or a tornado or hurricane that batters your city," she said. "Such calamities can leave your business miraculously unscathed, moderately damaged but still functional, or reduced to ashes and debris. While such disasters are thankfully infrequent, planning for the possibility is something that every small business owner should do before the unexpected happens."

Summers said presentations in the seminar include local response updates, gauging business readiness, creating a business continuity plan, selecting the right insurance, data security and crisis communications.

There is no cost to attend the event; however, pre-registration is preferred. Online registration is available at www.lsbdc.org.
