Plants that keep mosquitoes away

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Two things are almost guaranteed during a Louisiana summer: heat and mosquitoes. We can't do much about the temperature, but employees at one local nursery say there are lots of options when it comes to keeping mosquitoes away from your home.

Parsley, basil, rosemary are herbs that are good for more than just adding flavor to food

Louisiana Nursery bedding specialist Liz Morgan says these plants are also great for keeping mosquitoes away from your backyard.

"If you have them potted around your patio where you sit, you can kind of rough them up and release those scents and it will help keep mosquitoes away. Some of these you can also rub on your skin...crush the leaves and rub the oils onto your skin," said Morgan.

Morgan says as people are moving toward living greener lifestyles, she's had an influx of customers buying more plants to deal with garden pests and fewer chemicals and bug sprays.

"A lot of people I know are allergic to bug sprays. They irritate your skin, irritate your nasal passages," said Morgan. "Herbs are just the natural way to do the same thing, and they're pleasant to smell."

Some shoppers say these aromatic plants are allowing them to enjoy time in their backyards.

"We got one earlier this year and put it out on our patio, and we haven't had any mosquitoes yet. We had a crawfish boil the night before last, and we didn't have any mosquitoes there so I guess it works," said Steve Jessup.

"If I can keep the mosquitoes away, I can work in the yard later in the evening than I normally do," said Lisa Rainwater. "The mosquitoes do kind of get you late in the evenings. Now I feel like when the sun goes down I can do some work."

Morgan also reminds everyone to check their yards for standing water at least once a week.

She says keeping water out of toys and containers is the best way to keep mosquitoes from ruining your time outdoors.

Louisiana Nursery experts say citronella and lemon grass are two more plants that are great for keeping away those pesky mosquitoes, and all the plants mentioned are perfectly safe for your family pets.
