BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The 4th of July has always been a day to unwind, fire up the barbecue pit and relax with loved ones. But, before any of us become too caught up in the day's festivities, we should all take the time to reflect on the true reasons for our celebration.
July 4th commemorates the bravery of a small group of colonists who united to realize a shared dream. These early Americans did the impossible and secured freedoms for this great country that many in this world are still denied today.
To see how fortunate we are, you only have to look at the continuing political tensions in the Middle East. More than 100,000 people have died in Syria as a result of the now two year long civil war. The Syrian people are fighting for basic humanitarian rights, something we as Americans have enjoyed for more than 200 years.
If you do nothing else this holiday, please remember that freedom should never be taken for granted and that countless soldiers fight every day to protect the very foundation of what makes us American.
