Police: Teen cuts off man's earlobe with machete

SLIDELL, LA (WAFB) - A 16-year-old boy is in custody after police say he tried to kill his brother's friend with a 28 inch machete.

Slidell Police were called to the 1700 block of Lynnwood Drive and found a 31-year-old man with a "substantial" cut to his neck area. Police also found the 16-year-old suspect standing in the street holding a machete.

According to reports, police immediately took the teen into custody and, "without hesitation" the teen told police he tried to kill the man.

Slidell police say the teen and the 31-year-old man were arguing and the teen grabbed the machete and attacked the man from behind. Police believe the teen was trying to hit the victim in the neck, but instead, he missed and chopped off the man's right earlobe, nearly hitting the man's carotid artery.

The teen recently moved to Slidell, LA from Los Angeles, California. Slidell police say the teen is allegedly part of the MS-13 gang. A news release from the police department says the teen's brother moved him to Slidell "in hopes of giving him a better life."

The male victim was taken to a local hospital where he is recovering from his injury.

The teen was charged with attempted second degree murder and is being held in the Florida Parish Juvenile Detention Center.

Slidell, LA is about 90 miles east of Baton Rouge.
