TVA leaves big mess after clear-cutting trees in Williamson Co.

FRANKLIN, TN (WSMV) -

The Tennessee Valley Authority's policy of clear-cutting trees near its power lines has been going on for months now, but there's a new concern.

Citizens in Williamson County say the TVA promised to clean up after they cut, but six months later, the mess they left behind is still causing problems.

Bonnie Garner uses her Thompson's Station farm to rescue donkeys and horses, but after the TVA came through and cut down everything within 25 feet of their power lines, she feels like she needs to be rescued.

"For two weeks when I'd drive down my driveway, I'd just cry," Garner said.

And the tears were not for the loss of trees, although that's difficult. For Garner, it's the mess TVA left behind.

She said they told her they would chip everything, but giant unchipped logs have now rolled down a hill and knocked down a fence.

Even what was chipped doesn't really seem chipped.

Garner considers it the mess that keeps on giving. Every time it rains and floods, more debris gathers and clogs the culvert on her farm. She has had to pay a crew to clear the tree clutter several times since.

"About $2,000, and I'm not done. I just had to stop," she said.

Channel 4 News asked the TVA about the mess left behind, and a spokesman offered a statement.

"We did meet with Ms. Garner. We can't do much more, because of the embankment. The hill is a safety issue, because the equipment can't get on that slope. The vegetation is down to the ground where it is safe.

"She can keep in touch, and we will work with her, but it seems like we have done everything we can," said TVA spokesman Scott Brooks.

Down the road, 70-year-old Ruben Pruitt is furious. The champion roper has prize quarter-horses and believes the TVA has left his farm in a scary state.

"I mean, it is dangerous. I don't want to look at that the rest of my life," he said.

The TVA said it will revisit both situations but makes no promises that anything more can be done.
