Child drowns at neighborhood pool in Baker

BAKER, LA (WAFB) - Officials are investigating a drowning at a neighborhood pool in Baker, LA.

A 9-year-old boy died at the pool and was taken to Lane Regional Medical Center in Zachary.

Baker Fire Department responded to the call around 11:30 a.m. in the 2000 block of East Azalea Avenue. Baker Police Officers were already performing CPR on the child when the fire department arrived.

Officials say the child's name is LaDarius Bradford. A resident at the mobile home park went to the pool and found Bradford at the bottom of the pool. The resident told police she jumped in and pulled the child out and attempted CPR on him until emergency officials arrived.

"I noticed this girl walk up and she started screaming. And she got the little boy out the pool, but I don't know how long he had been in there," said Jason Augustus, who lives across the street from the Azalea Gardens Mobile Home & RV Park.

The pool is for residents in the Azalea Gardens Mobile Home & RV Park.

Detectives say the child was with his grandmother who was visiting a friend in the trailer park. The grandmother told detectives that Bradford could not swim.

Witnesses say they do not have lifeguards on duty. It is unknown on how long the child was in the pool before he was found.

"People just pop up from anywhere and just walk through the gate and just dive in the water. So I think the pool needs to be shut down," said Augustus.
