Settlement approved after cop pulls woman by her hair

The East Baton Rouge Metro Council approved a settlement Wednesday to the woman seen in video being dragged by her hair by a police officer.

Council members decided to pay Melinda Morris $30,000 following an incident in which Sgt. Bobby Schilling, a 19-year veteran with the Baton Rouge Police Department, pulled her from a ditch by her hair.

The incident was caught on camera by an amateur videographer on Sept. 10, 2011. Schilling was tending to a motorcycle crash on Nicholson Drive and said he felt he had to restrain a woman who was acting unruly.

Schilling was suspended because of the incident, but that was later overturned.

According to Schilling's attorney, Charlie Dirks, Morris can been seen hitting Schilling before falling into the ditch.

Dirks said Schilling gave Morris a verbal warning before pulling her out of the ditch by her hair.
