Police: Man with AK-47 stopped firefighters from responding to house fire

OTIS, OR (KPTV) -

Police scrambled to a home in Otis after a man armed with an AK-47 rifle tried to burn his house down while his family was inside, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said Leroy Adams had recently been distraught over family issues, and they said that's what led him to douse his home in diesel oil.

Two of his daughters, his wife and his mother were inside the home on Bear Creek Road near Highway 18.

When deputies and police arrived, Adams had an AK-47, several high capacity magazines and a handgun. He was preventing firefighters and paramedics from reaching the burning home.

Adams' two daughters were eventually able to get out of the home, but it took several minutes before Adams' mother and wife were able to get to police.

After about 30 minutes of negotiating, Adams surrendered to deputies and was taken into custody. He now faces charges of arson, reckless burning and menacing.

His home was completely destroyed.
