LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Family and friends remember a mother and daughter gunned down after a father opens fire on his family.

The shooting occurred June 19 on Gardiner Lane at Lakeview Condominiums when Gary Stewart shot and killed his daughter Shelbi, 8, and ex-girlfriend Jillian Wood. Stewart also died from a self-inflicted gunshot.

The mother and daughter were buried side-by-side Tuesday at Rest Haven Cemetery.

Wood's sister opened up about the community's support to help cover funeral and burial expenses.

"We are so appreciative. All we wanted was to have Jillian and Shelbi buried together. We're able to do that because everyone stepped forward. We appreciate it so much," Jessie Partin said.

Those who knew the family or wanted to offer condolences visited Fern Creek Funeral home Tuesday where visitation and funeral services were held.

Partin said donations and financial assistance has been overwhelming after relatives indicated they weren't sure how they'd cover funeral and burial expenses.

"There are so many people who came forward to help. They just offered everything and we appreciate it so much," Partin said.

Easy Cash Pawn owner Blake Goldsmith is among the donors who've supported the family. Goldsmith donated $7,500 toward burial costs.

Acquaintances and even strangers have donated flowers, burial plots and headstones.

Partin said they're now focused on Wood's 12-year-old son who escaped the condo with another relative when Stewart began shooting. She said the boy is living with another aunt who opened up her home to Jillian and her children before the June 19 crime.

"We just want to make sure he gets to stay with her - go to the same school, live in the same home, be with his friends and make sure he can have as normal of a life as possible," Partin said.

Stewart's mother, who he shot and caused life-threatening injuries, was listed in "stable condition" at University Hospital Tuesday.
