BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A mother has been arrested in connection with the death of her 11-month-old daughter.

Police arrested Ashley Heard, 28, and charged her with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.

The Baton Rouge Police Department said an autopsy was performed Monday morning and determined Aaliyah Heard, 11 months, died of blunt force head trauma.

Investigators said the infant was unresponsive when she was taken to Baton Rouge General Mid-City by EMS Friday afternoon.

Officers said she was later transferred to Baton Rouge General Bluebonnet, where she died Saturday just after 11 a.m.

Prior to the infant moving from one hospital to another, the police report shows officers found "multiple bruises on face, suspected cigarette burns to extremities, and a large burn to the upper right thigh."

It stated the baby suffered a broken right clavicle, bleeding on the brain and more. The police report also read the mother admitted to seeing the burn marks and bruises to the baby's face, but didn't report them, saying she thought they would go away. That's why she faces a charge for cruelty to a juvenile.

"They were visible. She should have seen them, and she should, as a parent, had an obligation to seek medical attention or if someone else was inflicting those sorts of injuries on her child, she should have notified law enforcement or child protection officials. She did not. None of those steps were taken," said BRPD's Lt. Don Kelly.

Officials added investigators with the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services also questioned the baby's relatives.

The coroner also reported medical examiners found other injuries on the child, including various marks, bruises and abrasions.

"Some of these injuries were recent and some were in various stages of healing," stated the report released to the media Monday afternoon.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and more charges against the mother could be pending along with additional arrests.
