Department of Transportation and Development officials confirm they are closing three railroad crossings in Tangipahoa Parish.

DOTD officials say they will close the Babb Street, Capace Road and Rev. J. White Road railroad crossings permanently in the next few days.

Neighbors in the area couldn't be happier. "There has been a lot of tragedy with the train," said Bobbie Williams. "If shutting it down will save people's lives, I say go for it."

Three years ago, a pregnant woman and her three teenaged brothers died in an accident at the Capace road crossing.

There are five crosses set up as memorials along the road there.

Ramona Lamonte uses the streets around the crossings and remembers the accident.

"That tore me up. And her daughter was pregnant for her grand baby. The closing will be a blessing," Lamonte said.

"Closing these crossings and redirecting traffic to crossings with enhanced safety equipment will greatly improve safety for drivers along this corridor," said DOTD Secretary Sherri LeBas.
